Privacy is a hot topic online. Are you concerned with your privacy online? The answer to this question will always depend on who you’re talking to and is often to one extreme or the other. While some have a casual attitude and don’t care about their privacy, other people will be overly concerned with their privacy. We’re all different people so we should have different answers.

Privacy matters aren’t exclusive to Facebook. This information can be found at various places online depending on what apps or websites we use. Google, Foursquare, Spotify, etc. can all tell people this information in various degrees.

A good rule of thumb is to know that when we share something online that it’s available for everyone to see. Simply put, if you don’t want someone to see something you post online then don’t post it. If you’re concerned about what you share on Facebook, be sure to check the “Apps You Use” in the Privacy Tab to ensure that you have full control of your privacy in a way that makes you feel comfortable. Every website or app we use has similar privacy policies in place that we can edit based on our level of concern.

Beyond web and app privacy controls there are a few ways we can protect our privacy online. One of the easiest ways to protect our accounts is to use alpha numeric passwords that are complex and longer than 8 characters. It’s also good t0 be aware that trending topics on twitter are often targets of spammers. Besides the privacy controls on Facebook, we should be careful of clicking random posts that look out of the ordinary on a friends wall, because they’re often attached to a spammer. We all treat our privacy with different degrees of attention. Whether we have a little or a lot of concern about our online privacy, each company has controls built in for us to set at a level we’re comfortable with. Although companies will try to ensure our privacy, there are some simple things we can do on our own to help protect ourselves. After all, it’s our privacy.
