“Android phones are on fire” says Google CEO Larry Page. There are over 850,000 Android devices activated every day across 55 manufacturers and 300 carriers. Innovation for Android phones seems to be happening quicker than any other mobile platform.  Innovation comes from a lot of places by various apps (like PicDial), but the base of all Android phones is their operating system. Android does not sit still very long and there a couple of major updates coming soon.

The current Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, just started sending out updates (Android 4.0.4) to various carriers this month. Your update will depend on your phone and your mobile service provider. Only about 2% – 3% of Android users are currently using Ice Cream; that number will surely rise as the update is rolled out to new phones and carriers.
This week Samsung Nexus S 4G owners were given the operating system update. This update features stability improvements, better camera performance, smoother screen rotation and improved phone number recognition.

While the new updates to Ice Cream Sandwich may not be considered major, the next big update to the Android operating system is around the corner. Android 5.0 will also be known as Jelly Bean and is rumored to be released in the third quarter this year. Jelly Bean is said to have a built-in File Manager that will enable you to easily organize your files and access them accordingly. There will also be a light version of the operating system for low end smartphones so that they can operate as well as high end phones.

Other updates include improved battery, power distribution and a more efficient operating system. Battery power is an issue for most smartphones and this update should help Android phones. Additionally, Google Chrome will be integrated with Jelly Bean smartphones. The addition of Chrome will give you the same experience that the desktop version gives you.
