Smartphone Ownership Now Half of Mobile Phone Ownership

To no surprise, smartphone ownership continues to rise. According to the most recent sales information from Nielsen almost half (49.7%) of U.S. mobile subscribers now own smartphones. This marks a 38% increase over the same subscriber information at this time last year. This growth is driven mostly by people switching from traditional handsets to smartphones. More than two-thirds of those who acquired a new mobile device in the last three months chose a smartphone over a traditional handset mobile phone.

Confirming the Nielsen research is another study from Pew Research Center, which states that 46% of American adults now own a smartphone. Their definition of a smartphone owner includes anyone who said yes to either of the following two questions:

1. Do you own a smartphone?
2. Does your mobile phone operate on a smartphone platform.

45% of mobile phone owners say that their phone is a smartphone, while 49% of mobile phone owners say that their phone operates on a smartphone platform. Together, just over half of mobile phone owners (53%) said yes to one or both of these statements.

The Nielsen study also shows that overall the Android operating system continues to lead the smartphone market in the United States with 48% of smartphone owners saying they owned an Android device. Among recent smartphone buyers who purchased their smartphone within the last three months, 48% of those surveyed said they chose an Android while 43% bought an iPhone.

Smartphones are like computers in your pocket and are here to stay.
