Cash and Credit Cards to Disappear by 2020? Very Possible

Mobile phones are changing the way we live our lives every day. Last month we pondered whether or not all Americans will be texting by the end of the year. Looking at the growth rates in text messaging, it’s very possible. Now we’re seeing that our mobile phones may be replacing our credits cards.

A Pew Internet study shows that credit cards may no longer be necessary for making purchases in just eight years, but cash may not be needed any longer either. Both cash and credit cards would be replaced by mobile wallets on smartphones. The study states that “As adoption of advanced mobile devices such as smartphones has exploded in recent years, consumers have grown increasingly comfortable using their phones to transfer money, purchase goods, and engage in other types of financial transactions.”

The survey shows that more than 33% of smartphone owners have used their mobile phone for online banking services like paying bills or checking a balance, and that 46% of app users have purchased an app using their mobile device. While neither are a majority, these percentages will very likely grow quickly as more smartphones are sold.

The research wasn’t only focused on current mobile phone users, but also surveyed technology experts. 65% of the technology experts surveyed by Pew believe that mobile wallets will be fully trusted and adopted by consumers to the point that they will replace cash and credit by 2020.

This study must also assume that almost 100% of Americans will be using smartphones by 2020. If that’s the case then the use of mobile wallets for all financial transactions doesn’t seem too far from reality. Over the past year we’ve been seeing commercials for mobile transactions by various banks and even retailers like Starbucks. The more successful those companies are in promoting mobile transactions, the more others will follow.

There’s nothing wrong with making the wallet more slender – after all, we need room in our pocket for our smartphones!
