Facebook Adding Organ Donor Status to Timeline

A few weeks ago Facebook announced plans to have organ donor status as an option for users to add to their Timeline. The addition of organ donor status to Timeline isn’t designed to gather more of your information. Rather, your organ donor status was added to help more than 114,000 people in the United States and millions more around the world that are waiting for a heart, kidney or liver transplants to save their lives.

Mashable quotes a Facebook blog entry that will shed a little more light on why they’ve added organ donor status to Timeline; “Many of those people — an average of 18 people per day –- will die waiting, because there simply aren’t enough organ donors to meet the need”…”Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis.”

In an interview with “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook explained that among the driving factors for starting this program was his friendship with Steve Jobs, whose life was extended following a liver transplant.

If you’re not already an organ donor, Facebook will be providing links to the appropriate registry for you to sign up to donate your vital organs. While privacy will always be a concern with Facebook, it looks like Facebook is covering all bases here and protecting your information. At the same time, you’re allowed to share or keep information hidden regarding your heart, kidney and liver donor status if you prefer not to share.

All in all, it does seem as if Facebook is doing a positive thing by adding organ donor status to Timeline and educating its users on how to donate their vital organs if they choose to. If Facebook can help save one life, this is a win for everyone involved.
