Social Networking really is good for you. Here’s proof.

We’re on social networks all the time. In the short term we’re on the sites because we enjoy staying in touch with people we know and even people we don’t know. We also use social networks to keep up with news from our favorite websites and blogs and we follow a few celebrities that we enjoy watching on TV or movies. Now there’s proof that social networking has a good effect on us and actually makes us more positive people.

A nationally representative phone survey by Pew Internet of adults in the United States finds that our time spent on social networks really is positive and, in turn, that helps make us more positive people. Pew Internet says that “The overall social and emotional climate of social networking sites is a very positive one where adult users get personal rewards and satisfactions at far higher levels than when they encounter anti-social people or have ill consequences from their encounters.”

The study shows that the vast majority of people (85%) have positive experiences on social network sites. Compare this with only 5% of respondents who say that the people they observe on social networks are mostly unkind. Impressively, 68% of social network users said that they had an experience that made them feel good about themselves.

Taking the positive experiences on social networks further, the study shows that 39% of adults that use social networks say they frequently see acts of generosity by other users. Another 36% say they sometimes see other people behaving generously and helpfully.
