How Do You Use Your Mobile Phone When You Travel?

It should not be a surprise that more people than ever are using apps when they travel. This number should continue to grow as smartphone use continues to grow. That said, it’s interesting to see how people are using their smartphones when they travel.

In a survey conducted by travel website, TripAdvisor, we see that nearly half of all fliers now use a smart phone to check their flight status. This is up from 30% of people checking in when surveyed from last year. This is becoming a basic task before most people fly. Most airlines either have an app or mobile version of their website where it’s easy to find this information. Why not spend a few minutes to find out if you can avoid spending extra time in an airport?

The next step in this progression will be when more people use their mobile phones as a boarding pass. Mobile boarding passes are still considered a new idea, but shouldn’t be too far behind checking on flight status or checking in for a flight (30% of survey) for travelers to use on their mobile phone.

The survey also looks at safety using mobile devices. 58% on those that took the survey “question whether shutting off electronic devices during takeoff and landing is really necessary.” Further, 40% of those surveyed can remember a time when they’ve left their mobile devices on during flight (accidentally or intentionally).

Air France is currently testing leaving mobile service on all devices during flights. We all want to be accessible to our friends and co-workers at all times and even turning off a game for 20 minutes has become an issue for many of us. This leads to the most interesting data we take from this study.

27% of those polled would choose one airline over another if the flight offered Wi-Fi. Smartphones, tablets and laptops are still relatively new to the majority of people that travel. This number seems high today but we would agree with the sentiment and look forward to the day where we are always able to be connected when we travel.
